Mini Musical Series: My top 5 Bollywood retro songs from the 70’s

Welcome to the second part of my mini musical series where I share my top 5 favourite Bollywood songs from the 1970’s. I have previously shared my top 5 favourite Bollywood songs from the 1960’s and if you missed reading that post, you can read it here.

Song: Kora Kaghaz Tha
Film: Aradhana
Starring: Sharmila Tagore and Rajesh Khanna
Music Director: SD Burman
Lyricist: Anand Bakshi

Kora Kaghaz is a song from one of my favourite Bollywood retro films, Aradhana. I know the film released in 1969, but I still decided to include it in this decade purely because of the films immense popularity and its beautiful romantic score. This song is my most favourite from the album and it is quite difficult for me to say it in words as to why I love it so much. It is a quintessential Bollywood melody that remains timeless even now.

Song: O Mere Dil Ke Chain
Film: Mere Jeevan Saathi
Starring: Tanuja and Rajesh Khanna
Music Director: RD Burman
Lyricist: Majrooh Sultanpuri

After choosing a song by SD Burman, my second favourite is O Mere Dil Ke Chain from the 1972 film Mere Jeevan Saathi. This song has a wonderful haunting melody and it never fails to put me in a good mood whenever I listen to it. I also love the SANAM rendition of the song. There is also another theme here in this decade, as nearly all of my top 5 songs a picturised on late Rajesh Khanna as he was one of my favourite actors of the retro season.

Song: Ye Jo Mohabbat Hai
Film: Kati Patang
Starring: Asha Parekh and Rajesh Khanna
Music Director: RD Burman
Lyricist: Anand Bakshi

Ye Jo Mohabbat Hai is possibly one of my favourite Rajesh Khanna songs. The way he has enacted it, and performed it will not only make you fall in love with his character, but also fall in love with this bittersweet melody about love and heartbreak.

Song: Saawan ka Mahina
Film: Milan
Starring: Sunil Dutt and Nutan
Music Director: Laxmikant-Pyarelal
Lyricist: Anand Bakshi

Ok, I know I am taking liberty here by adding a song from the 1967 film Milan, but this song has been one of my absolute childhood favourites while growing up. Like anyone who has listened to Saawan Ka Mahina right from the very beginning, the way Sunil Dutt’s character teaches Nutan’s character the correct way of pronouncing the word ‘sor’, it always made me giggle. Enjoy this melodious song, from such a romantic era of Bollywood

Song: Jhilmil Sitaron Ka
Film: Jeevan Mirtyu
Starring: Dharmendra and Rakhee
Music Director: Lakshmikant-Pyarelal
Lyricist: Anand Bakshi

The last song I have chosen is my dear Mum’s favourite and has been wonderfully picturised on Dharmendra and Rakhee. Jhilmil Sitaron Ka has a beautiful melody and is a song that talks about a couple dreaming about their future together. We very rarely get to hear such similar songs in today’s music (I believe the last semi popular song on this subject was Sapne Jahan from Brothers).

I hope you all enjoyed reading the second part of my mini music. The next part of the series will feature my top favourite songs from the 1980’s.
