New Music Monday: Piya Tose Naina Lage by Jonita Gandhi

This weeks New Music Monday features a new release from singer Jonita Gandhi – Piya Tose Naina Lage Re.

Back in the days when songs were covered, it was mostly to give a tribute to the original artist/musician who had either created or sung the song so well and Jonita’s cover of this retro Bollywood song has been exactly covered for this very reason: a tribute to India’s nightingale Lata Mangeshkar who celebrated her birthday last week.

Jonita has given us a unique take on the song from the Bollywod film Guide, as not only is it an acoustic version, but barely 2-3 instruments have been used in total with her voice effortlessly carrying the main melody of the song. It is a short cover at just 3.41mins but has been beautifully executed and the video too has been shot very differently and almost in a casual set up giving us relaxed vibes when listening to the melody.

One of the main reasons why I love Jonita’s singing so much, is because she is truly an effortless singer. There is absolutely no stress on her face while she is singing/performing and she can fool anyone into thinking that singing is such an easy thing to do. Having seen her perform live at a AR Rahman concert, I can also say that she is equally effortless on stage.

I hope you all enjoy this week’s New Music Monday!
