2018 has been a strange year for music in my opinion. In the Western music scene, we saw a few comebacks from some of my favourite artists such as Kylie Minogue, Simply Red releasing a DVD of their recent concert in Brazil. In the world of Bollywood Music however, 2018 was officially the year of song remakes (some of which are still releasing this month despite being majorly disappointing) but on the positive side, the Hindi independent music scene became much stronger and made its mark this year.
I have listed some of my favourite songs from this year below. There are more Western songs than Bollywood ones, and I predict that this is a sign of the times to come as the Bollywood music industry is nothing like it used to be.
Call Out My Name – The Weeknd
This is the first song that I have ever heard from The Weeknd and I instantly fell in love with its melody and the emotive vocals. I think it deserved to be a much bigger hit than it actually was.
Dancing – Kylie Minogue
Kylie Minogue released her latest album Golden this year and the first release from the album was the upbeat track Dancing. What I loved the most about Dancing, is that despite its strong vocals and overall happy vibe, the song was also reflective of Kylie’s struggle with breast cancer and this has been subtley reflected in some of the lyrics which makes Dancing a song with a lot of depth and meaning.
Moving into Bollywood territory, the only soundtrack that makes this list this year is the Genius soundtrack which has music composed by my favourite Bollywood composer Himesh Reshammiya. Not only was this a long awaited release, but it was the only melodious album of the year. Two songs which stood out from the album are Tera Fitoor and Dil Meri Na Sune.
Bheegi Bheegi Raaton Mein by SANAM
As you all know, I am a huge fan of India’s most commercially successful band SANAM. Not only have they recently crossed 5 million subscribers at YouTube, but their rendition of the Adnan Sami classic Bheegi Bheegi Raaton Mein is one of their finest renditions. You can check out my full review of the song here.
Tu Yahaan – SANAM
My last favourite is also another SANAM release which is their original composition Tu Yahaan. A real heartbreak kind of song,
Tu Yahaan is one of the band’s most powerful original releases and shows lead singer Sanam Puri’s powerful voice to the fullest.
I have also fallen back in love with some old favourites this year, which I have listed below. Its always a wonderful feeling to reconnect with the songs you once loved so much.
*Open Your Heart – Madonna
*Borderline – Madonna
*Ray of Light – Madonna
*Beautiful Stranger -Madonna
*In Blue album by The Corrs
*No Frontiers by The Corrs
*Crush by Jennifer Paige
*Rumours album by Fleetwood Mac
