“Positively classic in its teenage heartbreak delivery, the vocal range on show from Sophie makes it easy to see how she’s already gained early comparisons to Maisie Peters & GRIFF” – When The Horn Blows
“Boasting a timeless sound interspersed with cutting edge, modern sensibilities and a plethora of charisma and personality” – Clout Magazine
Off the back of a huge start to the year with support across BBC Radio One, Spotify UK and more, Sophie Griffiths needs a self-care Sunday like nobody else.
The last 12 months have been a whirlwind for Sophie Griffiths, from placements on Love Island and I’m A Celeb, to gaining her Radio One plays (Mollie King, Maia Beth, Gemma Bradley) as well as consistent support from Spotify UK. Now she thinks it is pertinent to remind herself, as well as her fans, that sometimes you just need a Power Cut.
Her latest releases, Modern Love and Mother’s Daughter, have already eclipsed 130,000 streams across all platforms with support coming via New Music Friday UK, Easy, Fresh Finds (Pop, UK & IE) and New Pop UK placement on Spotify, whilst also gaining support from Maia Beth, Mollie King and Gemma Bradley on BBC Radio One. She was also asked to co-host BBC Introducing Essex’s International Women’s Day special.
In true Sophie fashion, she has taken a subject many will find relatable but has delivered it with quips and clever turns of phrase that only she could. Lines like: “I run the race but I never win, Drag myself to hell and back again, Flipping the switch something new’s beginning”
The track sounds like an artist who is truly flourishing in her developing sound. Gathering all her influences from the 60s and 70s, Sophie presents those in a contemporary way. An old head on young shoulders, Sophie’s lyrics continue to be centered around subjects that any 20-year-old may be feeling or experiencing, but are written in such a way that any person of any age may find easy to relate to.
As 2023 progresses, it’s clear that the world is truly Sophie’s oyster. She could be the agony aunt to her generation or the artist that older generations have been waiting for.
Speaking about the song Sophie said: “Power Cut is a song about burnout and being in desperate need of a break. I wrote this song with my writing pal, Alex Charles, at a time where I was just exhausted. I was overworking, overthinking and just not allowing myself time off; I ended up almost burning out. It was at that point I learnt that, if I take care of myself I have so much more to offer the world than I do when I am running on empty. I started taking self-care days filled with the things that just make me feel good, and Power Cut was born. I wrote this song as a reminder that it’s okay to take a break; not just ok, but necessary!” Power Cut was written with Alex Charles (Westlife, Little Mix), Produced by James Smith (Alice Auer, Jorja Smith) and mixed by Alex Quinn (Michael Aldag, Katy Alex) making it a slice of pop perfection
With a new EP slated for end of year, and having already played shows with LYRA, Katie Kittermaster and CloseUp Festival. Sophie already has sets at110 Above Festival and Latitude in the diary, and Power Cut kickstarts an exciting second half of the year.
