Fox and Bones Unveil Retro-Tinged Indie Pop Single “Are We Still Having Fun?” Ahead of Upcoming Album

On Friday, April 24, Portland, Oregon-based indie pop band Fox and Bones will release Are We Still Having Fun? the lead single and title track from their much-anticipated fifth album arriving later this year.
Written as a response to an increasingly dark and complicated political and social climate, as well as the duo’s own burnout and stress as musicians who’ve been grinding it out for the past decade, the relatable song reflects their search for hope amid uncertainty.
The new single blends elements of Fox and Bones’ Americana and folk-rock roots with pop stylings that are both retro and modern, encompassing adult contemporary sensibilities. The track opens with a nostalgic chorus of gang vocals and bright guitars, and heavily features retro guitar and organ throughout.
The lyrics are crafted to evoke a sense of nostalgia, inviting listeners back to a simpler, more carefree time such as “Coming home with the streetlights // Sneaking out after dark // On the wrong side of midnight // To figure out who we are.” The closing lines “All of it is right here right now // We all gotta get there somehow,” remind listeners that the things they long for still exist within us.
Speaking about the single, Fox and Bones share:
“This song was a way of taking a temperature check on our desire to keep making music, and despite the hardships, the answer is still a resounding yes. It’s also a reaction to the world around us seemingly going up in flames, and a reminder to our listeners that we can choose joy right now – in the little things, in our relationships, in nature. But we have to make the choice to find it.”

This release follows the band’s well-received fourth album “Long Time Honey,” which was awarded Best Folk/Americana Album of 2024 by the PNW Music Awards and hailed as “one of the best Americana albums of the year” by Americana Highways. “Are We Still Having Fun?” marks thebeginning of a larger rollout including four additional singles, two music videos, and a full album arriving Sept. 24, 2026, followed by a tour. The project is a collaboration with multi-platinum selling songwriter, artist and producer Greg Holden.
The only thing better than dating someone in your band is dating no one in your band. At least, that’s what the latest chapter of Portland, Oregon-based indie pop outfit Fox and Bones seems to suggest, as their best work to date arrives following their split as a romantic duo. Their sound has also been elevated by the addition of internationally acclaimed songwriter Greg Holden, who joined the project as producer, shaping both their award-winning 2024 album “Long Time Honey” and upcoming fifth studio record “Are We Still Having Fun?” due for release September 2026, and primed to be Fox and Bones’ strongest release yet.
And after 200,000 miles on the road and a decade together, it better be. Fox and Bones has toured tirelessly throughout their career, sharing stages with the likes of Rayland Baxter, The Dead South, ZZ Ward, Fantastic Cat, ALO and Glitterfox, among others. Their accolades include Best Folk/Americana Album of 2024 by the PNW Music Awards, first place at the 2023 Tucson Folk Festival songwriting contest, and second place in the International Acoustic Music Awards.
When they’re not on the road or in the studio, they run Portland’s Folk Festival which they founded in 2018. Hosted annually at the iconic Crystal Ballroom, the festival is a celebration of folk and roots music in their hometown of Portland, Oregon.
