More than three decades of Manchester music history – from unsigned bands in underground venues to Robbie Williams on tour and legendary guitarist Scotty Moore – will go on display at Manchester Central Library, this autumn.

Photographer, author and North Manchester storyteller Karen McBride will present Just a Girl from North Manchester: A Photographic Exhibition from 4 September to 31 December 2026.
For McBride, whose journey began on a North Manchester council estate, seeing her life’s work displayed just three miles from where she grew up is a poignant homecoming.
“Those three miles felt like a different world when I was growing up,” McBride says. “Hope wasn’t highlighted as an option. If it hadn’t been for my art teacher and my parents’ record collection, I don’t know what path my life would have taken.”
Drawn from McBride’s independently published book, Just a Girl from North Manchester, the exhibition brings together black-and-white photographs, original darkroom wet prints, contact sheets, cameras, equipment and memories from more than 30 years behind the lens.
The collection will be displayed across nine original vintage cabinets designed especially for Manchester Central Library when the building first opened.
McBride’s career has taken her from Manchester’s grassroots venues to photographing internationally recognised artists. Yet the musicians working outside the spotlight remain at the heart of both the book and the exhibition.
“Photographing Robbie Williams on tour and Elvis guitarist Scotty Moore were extraordinary experiences, but the unsigned bands have always mattered most to me,” says McBride. “They trusted me before anyone was paying attention. They are the lifeblood of Manchester music, and this exhibition is for the unsigned, unseen and unheard as much as it is for the names people already know.”
A darkroom made by hand
A centrepiece of the exhibition is a museum-style, 1:8 scale model of a traditional British black-and-white darkroom from the 1980s. McBride designed and scratch-built it especially for the library display, using card, wood, styrene, paper and individually handcrafted components – without a commercial kit or laser-cut parts.
The miniature contains a scale replica of one of McBride’s original wet prints. One of only eight remaining full-size originals will be exhibited in the same cabinet, connecting the handmade model directly to the real darkroom process that produced the photograph.
“It is not just about making photographs. It is about the craft, the process and the passion behind them,” McBride says. “I wanted people to see the contact sheets, the equipment, the darkroom and the time it takes to make a true wet print. A working method. A way of seeing. A love of making.”
Bringing the book to life
The exhibition grows directly from McBride’s self-published book Just a Girl from North Manchester, published in March 2026. Both the book and exhibition tell a story shaped by North Manchester, independent music and a determination to preserve people and moments that might otherwise be forgotten.
“North Manchester made me,” says McBride. “I self-published because the truth does not ask permission. This exhibition brings that story home – not polished into something else, but honest, handmade and still rooted in where I came from.”
Special in-conversation event – 9 September
On Wednesday 9 September, McBride will discuss the stories behind the photographs, the making of the exhibition and the journey behind the book in conversation with Nicola Howard. The evening will also feature live music from Shimeon.
The event takes place in Manchester Central Library’s Performance Space from 6.00pm to 7.30pm. Tickets are pay-what-you-like, with donations supporting future Manchester Libraries activities. Booking and full event details: librarylive.co.uk/event/14220
