Olivia Swann Celebrates Judy Garland’s Spirit With New Jazz Single Judy

Singer-songwriter Olivia Swann has released a new jazz single called Judy this week, arriving deliberately on the anniversary of Judy Garland‘s death on 22 June 1969. Rather than retreating into the well-worn story of struggle and hardship that’s come to define so much of Garland’s narrative, Olivia does something quietly braver and celebrates the woman behind the
Through unhurried songwriting and emotional storytelling that doesn’t announce itself, the track turns its attention to Garland’s resilience and her near-unshakeable dedication to her craft, and the parts that usually get lost beneath the headlines.
“I wrote this song after becoming really moved by watching old performances of Judy Garland,” Olivia explains. “Judy’s story always seems to get reduced to tragedy, to suffering, to the hardships she endured. And while those were, of course, part of her life, I wanted to write something that looked beyond them. I wanted to celebrate the woman herself: not just her incredible talents, but her resilience, her authenticity, her kindness and her courage. The more I watched her perform, the more I just saw someone who’d fought through so much, all while still giving everything she had to her audience. She’s simply irreplaceable. This song is my tribute to her spirit.”
The result is a deeply personal reflection on perseverance, and one that holds admiration and gratitude in the same breath. Olivia’s distinctive vocal and intimate lyricism are met by Nikko Ielasi’s considerable craftsmanship on piano, whose intricate, emotional playing wraps around the vocal and lingers a fair bit longer than the track’s running time. Together, they’ve made something that stirs something deep and stays with you long after the last note fades.
